CES 2022: What's happening with the next consumer electronics show?

The biggest tech event in the calendar, CES (formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show), rolls around each and every January, bringing heaps of new announcements and product launches. 

While the 2021 event was rather different - like many shows and launches since early 2020 - the organiser of the show, the US Consumer Electronics Association (CTA), has announced a full return to Las Vegas for CES 2022, though there will be an online element as well. 

"We're thrilled to return to Las Vegas - home to CES for more than 40 years - and look forward to seeing many new and returning faces," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the CTA. "Hundreds of executives have told us how much they need CES to meet new and existing customers, find partners, reach media, and discover innovation."

However, mere weeks and days ahead of the show kicking off, various companies have pulled out physical attendance, citing the ongoing world situation as reason. The CTA says that it will be reviewing guidelines for safety measures, but that the show will go on - albeit for one day less than usual.

When is CES 2022?

CES 2022 will start on Wednesday 5 January and run through to Friday 7 January 2022 (it was originally Saturday 8, but the show's length has been curtailed in light of ongoing events). Expect most of the announcements to take place on Monday 3 and Tuesday 4 January as those are the press, analyst and media days. However, as we've seen before, some manufacturers will be holding their own events and these will fall outside of the official CES events. 

Who attends CES? 

CES is an industry event so the public cannot attend. But anyone connected to the consumer electronics industry can apply for a pass. In 2019 over 182,000 people attended, which was the show's then capacity. That included 69,000 exhibitors (across more than 4,000 represented companies) and almost 7,000 members of the media. The 2022 show won't be as large, due to attendance commitments, international travel restrictions, and so forth.

What to expect from CES 2022

There will be a full run of press conferences, both in-person and virtual, and we're expecting a full line-up of new product launches to go along with those. Traditionally, CES sees the launch of new televisions, with flagship models revealed, alongside new technology that's going to drive the industry throughout the year - and beyond.

Acer at CES 2022

Acer has confirmed it won't have an official presence at CES 2022, however we don't think that will stop the company from announcing new laptop refreshes - it is typically among the first to reveal fresh kit before the show's media days kick-off.

Dell at CES 2022

Another big-hitter, CES tends to be the platform to reveal the XPS laptop refresh - so will 2022 mark the same tradition? Furthermore, we've already been privy to some pre-CES releases, such as the modular laptop concept, showing that Dell continues to think outside of the box.

Hyundai at CES 2022

• 4 Jan, 3pm PST (11pm UK, midnight EU)

Hyundai is hosting a press conference at CES 2022. In recent years, there's been a marked growth in automotive brands at the show. It looks like Hyundai will be talking more about Boston Dynamics and how robotics will play a part in shifting the company from car manufacturer to mobility provider.

Intel at CES 2022

• 4 Jan, 10am PST (6pm UK, 7pm EU)

Intel's processor business typically reveals its annual refresh. And with AMD and Apple having muscled in on the company's bread and butter, expect a big shout around its Intel Core i 12th Gen processors. There's also expected to be more revealed about Intel Arc, the company's new discrete graphics offering. However, the company withdrew physical attendance late 2021.

Lenovo at CES 2022

While Lenovo doesn't host a conference, it typically reveals lashings of products across a wide range of laptop, connectivity, and tablet spaces. However, the company withdrew its attendance on 23 December 2021, so there won't be any physical presence to accompany any product announcements.

LG at CES 2022

• 4 Jan, 8am PST (4pm UK, 5pm EU)

LG will be holding a press conference and, as is typical, it will be one of the first on the agenda. There will also be a physical and virtual exhibition - where it'll be showing off new OLED tellies and Flexible OLED concept solutions. We're expecting updates across LG's range of consumer devices and white goods too.

The big news has already been officially revealed though: OLED EX will be the next-gen 2022 top-tier television tech to watch out for. We'll be going to see the new tellies at the show.

Nvidia at CES 2022

• 4 Jan, 8am PST (4pm UK, 5pm EU)

Nvidia tells us that its CES showcase will "address the latest breakthroughs in accelerated computing - from design and simulation to gaming and autonomous machines." Dooesn't necessarily sound like a new GPU, then, but we're expecting the RTX 3090 Ti may be revealed...

Panasonic at CES 2022

• 4 Jan, 10am PST (6pm UK, 7pm EU)

Panasonic is hosting a press conference at CES and we're likely to see the focus on television. Its stand is usually more business orientated, especially as the company provides a huge portion of the aviation industry with in-flight entertainment kit, Wi-Fi, and so on. While the presentation will be virtual now, the company has committed to its on-site stand with a reduction in staff.

Qualcomm at CES 2022

• 4 Jan, 11am PST (7pm UK, 8pm EU)

With Qualcomm having hardware in many technology devices, CES is often a core destination for all things connected. Although Qualcomm announces its big moves at Snapdragon Summit, we're sure there will be plenty more to get excited about in Vegas.

Samsung at CES 2022

• Keynote: 4 Jan, 6.30pm PST (5 Jan, 2.30am UK, 3.30am EU)

Samsung usually has one of the biggest press conferences at CES, with a huge range of introductions, which you can tune into right here.

Rumours say that Samsung will be introducing QD-OLED - Quantum Dot OLED - a panel technology designed to help Samsung compete with high-end OLED sets, the type we see from LG.

There's also a keynote, in which the company will showcase its wide product range, scheduled at the very end of 4 January. There's also increasing rumours that this will be when the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE is unveiled.

Sony at CES 2022

• 4 Jan, 5pm PST (5 Jan 1am UK, 2am EU)

Sony traditionally rounds out the first media day at CES - and we're expecting again to see advances in television from this year's showcase. You can watch the showcase right here.
