Virgin Media O2 completes gigabit broadband rollout, now available across entire network
Virgin Media O2 has completed its rollout of gigabit broadband, with its entire network now able to access up to 1,130Mbps download speeds.
It has come good on its promise to finish the switchover by the end of 2021, adding the last 1.1 million UK homes in the last few weeks. That means Virgin Media O2's gigabit broadband service is now available to 15.5 million homes up and down Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
All customers who can get Virgin Media broadband can sign up for the provider's Gig1 service.
"Getting high speed broadband into everyone's homes is a top priority and Virgin Media O2's efforts mean we're making quick progress in our mission to level up the UK with better connectivity," said the UK government's digital secretary, Nadine Dorries.
"We must ensure that rural areas are not left behind, which is why alongside industry's roll out we're investing up to £5 billion to make top-of-the-range speeds available in hard-to-reach communities."
A Gig1 fibre broadband package starts at £62 per month for broadband alone. It currently includes the Virgin Media Hub 4 router. The company also plans to upgrade all customers with a new, Wi-Fi 6-enabled model - the Hub 5 - from 2022.
