Sonos Ikea Symfonisk Picture Frame speaker release date, rumours, specs, price

Sonos and Ikea have both teased that new Symfonisk products are coming, though neither company has officially (at least not on purpose) detailed what those products are, as yet.

When we said not on purpose, Ikea did reveal one of the products on its on website by accident, so there is now plenty of information and rumours surrounding the Sonos Ikea Symfonisk Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker. The other product is said to be a Table Lamp Speaker revamp.

Here is everything we know so far about the next Sonos Ikea Symfonisk speakers.

Release date and price

  • 14 June 2021?
  • Table Lamp - $179/£150
  • Picture frame with Wi-Fi Speaker - $199

A Sonos spokesperson told Pocket-lint: "The partnership [Sonos and Ikea] is stronger than ever and we're excited about the products we're working on together. We look forward to sharing more when the time is right."

Currently, there is no official word on when the "products" might be released, but we suspect it will be before the end of summer given there have been FCC filings and official teasers on social media, as well as an accidental reveal by Ikea on its own website.

An Ikea internal marketing calendar shared to Reddit has a "Symfonisk Virtual Press Event" on 14 June 2021, but that's not confirmed as yet.

The Sonos Ikea Symfonisk Book Shelf Speaker and Symfonisk Table Lamp Speaker went on sale in August 2019, having been announced earlier in the year so a June reveal wouldn't be surprising.

In terms of price, according to The Verge, the expected update to the Table Lamp Speaker will apparently cost around the same as its predecessor. If true, this would be around £150 in the UK and $179 in the US.

The picture frame with Wi-Fi speaker - apparently codenamed Titan - was listed on Ikea's site (before being taken down) as $199. While pricey, it's much cheaper than alternatives like Soundwall offers for example.

Design

This is everything we know so far about the design of the next Symfonisk speakers.

Symfonisk Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker

Thanks to the leak by Ikea on its website, we know quite a bit about the Symfonisk Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker. Based on the listing, it will be a print rather than a picture frame you can place your own photos into and the Sonos Wi-Fi speaker will be integrated inside.

The print shown on the listing was a geometric style but it said customers could choose between "various interchangeable fronts" so there's likely to be a few options to suit various décors. The frame is only said to be offered in Black and White options though and it will apparently measure 22-inches high, by 16-inches wide and it will be 2-inches deep.

Based on the listing, the Sonos and Ikea branding will be positioned on the frame, while the material the picture is printed onto has presumably been designed with acoustics in mind. A previous report claimed a power cord would run down from the bottom so we're not expecting the picture frame to be battery-operated like the Sonos Move or Roam.

Symfonisk Table Lamp Speaker 2

In terms of the revamped Table Lamp Speaker that is expected, not much information is currently known about this product as the leaks haven't been quite as substantial as the picture frame, as yet.

It's not currently clear if the design will change, but tweaks are certainly likely. Given it is expected to be the same price, it is likely to still be a large lamp, rather than a smaller offering, even though smaller would be great to see. Who knows though, perhaps it will be smaller but smarter.

Features and specs

Here is everything we have heard so far about the features and hardware expected for the next Symfonisk products.

Symfonisk Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker

According to the accidental Ikea website listing, the Symfonisk Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker will support Apple AirPlay 2. It is also listed as offering stereo pairing and the ability to add two as surrounds to a Sonos Beam or Sonos Arc soundbar. None of these are particularly surprising as the previous Symfonisk products offer this.

We are also expecting all the standard Sonos features on board, including equaliser adjustment, and compatibility with over 100 streaming services, as well as Sonos Radio. We are not expecting Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa though, nor features like Sound Swap.

In terms of sound, given it's Sonos making it, we expect the Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker to sound good. The company is known for delivering big sound from a small package - Roam being a prime example - but for now, there are no reports to suggest what is behind that print in terms of hardware.

The only thing we have so far is Sara Morris, product manager at Sonos, who was quoted on the Ikea listing saying: "By working together with the designers we were able to keep the thin edge of the picture frame while hiding a deeper acoustic volume behind it. Together with a waveguide, this let us make big room filling sound from what looks like a thin speaker."

Symfonisk Table Lamp Speaker 2

Though there have been less leaks surrounding the revamped Symfonisk Table Lamp Speaker, we expect all the same features as the Picture Frame with Wi-Fi Speaker, as well as the same features as the original.

Again, we don't expect to see the smart assistants on board - though we might be surprised - but we're fully expecting AirPlay 2, stereo pairing, the ability to pair two to create surrounds to a Sonos soundbar, and compatibility with over 100 music services, among the many other features offered by Sonos.

In terms of hardware, the original Table Lamp Speaker has the Sonos Play:1 specs under its hood. We'd expect an upgrade to the hardware in terms of audio and processor, perhaps allowing for some of the more demanding features, like Sonos Sound Swap that was introduced on Roam, for example.
