Best upcoming Nintendo Switch games to look forward to in 2021

The Nintendo Switch has proven to be a very capable competitor to the PS4 and Xbox One, while offering something else besides - in the form of portability, and it's still just as impressive now that the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have launched.

And, with the Nintendo Switch Lite also going great guns, there are a ton of fans looking for the best games to buy.

That's why we've gathered a list of the upcoming Switch games we've got our own beady eyes on. You can find them in chronological order – soonest first – and with trailers for each.

New Pokémon Snap

  • Release date: April 30th 2021
  • Switch exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

We've been waiting 20 years for a new Pokémon Snap game, and it's finally on the way - recently announced as a new Switch game, it looks frankly delightful, and a great way to relax while taking pictures of your favourite pocket monsters.

Mario Golf: Super Rush

  • Release date: June 25th 2021
  • Switch exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Mario has a nice tradition of fronting fun party sports games, and golf is no exception - now we're getting another Mario Golf game! It looks like great fun, too, with a story mode to help new players get to grips with its systems, and loads of multiplayer modes to have a ball with.

There's the option of using a Joy-Con as a motion controller to really get into the game, but you can also use standard button controls if you want something less active, or have a Switch Lite.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD

  • Release date: July 16th 2021
  • Switch exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

This recently-announced remaster of a Zelda classic from the Wii era is part of the celebration of the franchise's 35th anniversary, a hugely impressive milestone. It'll see players returning to a game that's been upgraded with much-improved graphics.

The controls have also been given plenty of attention to make it easier to play, including the option to do so without any motion controls, so it's a great chance to revisit one of Link's most unique adventures.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

  • Release date: Late 2021
  • Switch exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

These upcoming remakes of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl look absolutely brilliant, updating the graphics of the classic DS titles but retaining their art style, and letting a whole new generation of players enjoy their story.

They're from the true heyday of the franchise, in our opinion, so we can't wait to sink back into the Sinnoh region and explore eveything all over again.

Buildings have feelings too!

  • Release date: TBC 2021
  • Switch exclusive: No
  • Publisher: Merge Games

If you love city building sims but are bored of the same old formula, then this might be for you. It features gameplay where the buildings "can walk and talk to one another", have their own hopes and fears, and feelings too.

Players will not only have to build a city but also ensure the buildings don't die as well. No, really.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

  • Release date: 2021
  • Switch exclusive: No
  • Publisher: Team Cherry

Hollow Knight: Silksong is an upcoming Metroidvania action-adventure video game that's the sequel to 2017's award-winning Hollow Knight. You'll be journeying to all new lands with special powers to battle the bug hordes. It has been suggested that this game will launch in June but there's no official word yet.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus

  • Release date: Early 2022
  • Switch Exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

This looks like a fairly radical new entry in the mainline Pokémon series - it's a flashback to a feudal-style time, where players will explore Sinnoh for the first time, compiling its first ever Pokédex as they go.

It loos like we'll have a true open world to explore, without boundaries and restrictions, and the new time setting looks absolutely gorgeous so far. It's a way off release, but this could be a special moment in the franchise's history if it comes off.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

  • Release date: TBC
  • Switch exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Although we don't yet know the official name, we're happy to see that the sequel to one of the most popular games on Switch is getting a sequel. That's right The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild is getting another outing. We don't know when it is coming, but it's been teased at E3 2019 as being in development, so that's fairly exciting.

Bayonetta 3

  • Release date: TBC
  • Switch exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Bayonetta 3 was announced way back in 2017. There's still no news on when it's going to be released, but fans of the series are no doubt waiting with bated breath.

Metroid Prime 4

  • Release date: TBC
  • Switch exclusive: Yes
  • Publisher: Nintendo

Nintendo announced a new instalment of Metroid Prime, this time for Switch, during its E3 2017 Spotlight presentation but few other details have emerged in more than a year. We do know though that Bandai Namco is working on the game as its development studio.
