OnePlus 8T release date, rumours, features and specs
OnePlus may have only recently announced the cheaper and more affordable OnePlus Nord, but that's not the last we're going to see from the company before the year is out.
The manufacturer has confirmed that a "T" model of the OnePlus 8 is coming, and there have been plenty of rumours surfacing regarding the upcoming phone already. There's been no official confirmation about a Pro model yet, and the jury's out on whether it'll even appear this year.
Here is everything we have heard so far about the OnePlus 8T.
Release date and price
- 14 October launch date
- OnePlus 8T could cost €799/$799
OnePlus has officially revealed that the OnePlus 8T will be unveiled on 14 October, making it slightly later in the year than 2019's T-series. The OnePlus 7T models were revealed in September 2019, while the OnePlus 6T was announced in November 2018.
While it would seem reasonable for the new phone to be similar to its predecessor in terms of price, a rumour suggests it could be more expensive. The rumoured price for the 8GB/128GB version is €799/$799, while the higher storage version could be €899/$899.
We're a little sceptical about the pricing, since the OnePlus 8 starts at $699 in the US, while the 8 Pro starts at $899. It would make the new series a lot more expensive than the non T-version, and push the regular OnePlus 8T up to the 8 Pro price bracket, despite seemingly not offering as many top-tier features.
Design
- New Nord-like design
- Only one model
In the past, the OnePlus "T" devices had been more about a hardware upgrade more than a design upgrade - though this wasn't the case for the OnePlus 7T, which did offer a different look to the OnePlus 7.
Leaked renders appear to show that there will be some relatively significant changes to the design, compared to the OnePlus 8. Specifically, the phone seems to be adopting a flat screen on the front, with little in the way of curved glass near the edges.
What's more, the camera housing is in the top left corner like the OnePlus Nord but is large and rectangular, rather than being central and pill-shaped.
There's only going to be one model, the OnePlus 8T and no 'Pro' version, so we're not going to see two different designs this year.
Display
- 8T: 6.55-inch, Full HD+, AMOLED, 120Hz
OnePlus has confirmed that its next phone will feature a 6.55-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The resolution will be fullHD+, making it the same as the OnePlus 8, while the higher refresh rate is the same as the OnePlus 8 Pro.
It's also going to feature a peak brightness of 1,100nits and support HDR10+ content while also being super accurate, covering 100 per cent of DCI-P3 colour space.
From the leaks - as you can see in the design - the display isn't curved at the edges, and that could mean we're less likely to suffer from any accidental touches and from any slight video distortion at the sides of the screen. It may mean the phone is bigger though.
OnePlus has also confirmed that it will feature even thinner bezels than before. So while the display itself is the same size as the OnePlus 8's, the border around it should be narrower.
For reference, the OnePlus 8 has a 6.55-inch, Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, while the 8 Pro has a 6.7-inch, Quad HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.
Hardware and specs
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus likely
- 8GB/12GB RAM options
- 128GB or 256GB storage variants
- 4,500mAh battery
- 65W fast charging
OnePlus and Qualcomm have a long-standing relationship so it's likely the OnePlus 8T will feature the latest Qualcomm processor under its hood, although there's some uncertainty over which one. Some rumours suggest the 865, others claim the 865+.
Whichever version it's going to use, it will be 5G. OnePlus virtually confirmed that fact when it initially announced the impending arrival of the phone by offering Indian fans a chance to win a OnePlus 8T 5G.
It's claimed the phone will be available in two storage variants: 128GB and 256GB, with the former sporting 8GB RAM and the latter featuring 12GB.
In terms of battery, OnePlus has confirmed we're going to see a 4,500mAh battery, making it 200mAh more capacious than the 4,300mAh in the OnePlus 8. It would be great to see wireless charging on the standard 8T this time around, especially with the 8T Pro not coming, but nothing has been said on that yet.
Despite no news on wireless charging, OnePlus has announced that the 8T will offer faster charging using its brand new Warp Charge 65 adapter - a speed both the Oppo Find X2 Pro and Realme X50 Pro offer.
Cameras
- Quad rear (main, ultra-wide, macro, depth)
Rumours have suggested the OnePlus 8T will feature a quad rear camera, but it's claimed there won't be a telephoto lens onboard, like the OnePlus 8 Pro. A 48-megapixel main camera, 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 5-megapixel macro camera and a 2-megapixel depth camera have been reported.
The OnePlus 8 has a triple rear camera made up of a 48-megapixel main, 16-megapixel 116-degree ultra-wide sensor and a 2-megapixel macro sensor. The OnePlus 8 Pro has a quad camera, consisting of a 48-megapixel main, 48-megapixel ultra-wide, 8-megapixel telephoto and 5-megapixel photochromatic sensor.
