Google Pixel 4a 5G: Release date, rumours, specs and price

In 2019 Google launched a more affordable handset to its Pixel line, the Pixel 3a. The company followed this device up with the Pixel 4a in August 2020 - a few months later than expected.

Google has confirmed there's going to be a 5G model of the Pixel 4a before 2020 is out. This is everything we have heard about the Pixel 4a (5G) so far, including price, release date, design and specifications.

Release date and price

  • 30 September launch event
  • $499
  • Coming to 9 countries

The Google Pixel 4a was announced on 3 August and is available to buy in the US for $349. For those in the UK, the Pixel 4a went on pre-order for £349 from 10 September, with an on-sale date of 1 October.

Google will be holding an event on 30 September to launch new hardware and we're expecting to see the Pixel 4a 5G announced at that event.

The Pixel 4a 5G is confirmed to be coming this "fall" with the Pixel 5. Google confirmed in its blog post surrounding the launch of the Pixel 4a that the 5G model will start at $499 in the US. It will be coming to the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Australia.

Design

  • Larger than Pixel 4a
  • Polycarbonate body
  • White colour option

The Google Pixel 4a 5G is expected to have the same design as the Pixel 4a, feature a polycarbonate body, coupled with a coloured power button.

We're expecting slightly larger dimensions to the Pixel 4a as the device is said to have a bigger display. A leak has suggested we'll see it in a white colour, although Google's tease shows a black phone.

Assuming the 5G models offers the same design as the 4G model, you'll find a pronounced square black camera housing on the rear with a single camera lens and flash in the top left corner and a physical fingerprint sensor in the centre of the rear. On the front, the display will likely have minimal bezels and a punch hole camera, like the Pixel 4a. A 3.5mm headphone jack is also likely.

Display

  • 6.2-inch display
  • Punch hole camera
  • OLED, 60Hz

The display on the Pixel 4a 5G is claimed to be larger than the Pixel 4a. It's said it will offer a 6.3-inch screen, but there have been no further details on the resolution or aspect ratio.

It is said to have a punch hole for the front camera though, like the Pixel 4a, and it's also claimed to have a 60Hz refresh rate.

Hardware specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, 5G
  • 6GB RAM, 128GB storage
  • 3800mAh battery

Rumours suggest the Google Pixel 4a 5G will run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G with 6GB of RAM. We suspect there will be at least 128GB of storage, with no microSD support.

There's been talk of a 3800mAh battery and it's also thought the Pixel 4a 5G will have a 3.5mm audio jack. A live image suggests there will be a physical fingerprint sensor on the rear.

Camera

  • 12.2-megapixel main camera
  • 8-megapixel front camera

Like the Pixel 3a did with the Pixel 3, the Pixel 4a has the same camera unit as the Pixel 4 - that's the point of these phones after all - to give you access to those camera skills at a lower price point. We therefore expect the Pixel 4a 5G to offer the same too.

If right, you can expect a 12.2-megapixel 1.4µm sensor with f/1.7 lens and optical image stabilisation with all the AI skills of the Pixel 4, like Night Sight with astrophotography mode, Top Shot and Portrait Mode.

The front camera in the display is likely to be an 8-megapixel 1.22µm sensor with f/2.0 lens.
