Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War release date, rumours, formats and everything you need to know

Now that the latest Call of Duty is announced and available for pre-order, details are being released regularly.

So, what do we know about it so far? When will it be released and what platforms will it be available on?

Here's everything you need to know about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

COD: Black Ops Cold War worldwide reveal trailer

After months of teases inside COD: Warzone, Activision confirmed the name and setting in its first trailer - the worldwide reveal. You can watch it in up to 4K below.

Captured on a PlayStation 5 - hence some incredible lighting effects - the trailer shows that the campaign will take place between the 1960s and 80s, with the major reveal being ex-US president Ronald Reagan taking a starring role.

A further multiplayer reveal trailer was released on 9 September, which you can see and read about below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer reveal trailer

Activision and Treyarch released a multiplayer reveal trailer in September to show off the developer's trademark MP skills. It looks to be also captured on PS5.

Note, this is not Warzone, this is of the PVP multiplayer modes you can expect in Black Ops Cold War.

COD: Black Ops Cold War release date

As revealed in the worldwide reveal trailer, the game will be released on 13 November, although those who pre-order it will also gain access to an open beta.

Those who order the PS4 version will get earlier access than others.

COD: Black Ops Cold War platforms

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold will be available first on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC.

It will also arrive on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PS5 "holiday 2020" - that's likely to be usual 13 November release date for the Xbox Series machines as they will be available a few days earlier.

We're still waiting to hear when the PlayStation 5 will launch.

Sadly, there's no free upgrade plan from current to next-gen console versions - unlike some rival games. However, a bundle will be available for a little more than the standard price that will include an upgrade.

It's worth noting that the next-gen machines will be able to play in up to 120fps, although the main, stable target is 4K 60fps. High-end PCs could even get frame rates higher than 120fps.

COD: Black Ops Cold War maps and multiplayer modes

As well as the multiplayer reveal trailer above, Activision streamed a reveal event on 9 September that lasted more than four hours. You can watch it in its entirety below (if you have the stamina).

It revealed several of the maps and modes you can expect with the full release.

Cross-play

One of the biggest announcements is that COD: Black Ops Cold War multiplayer will be completely cross-play between consoles and PC, including the next-gen machines. That means it doesn't matter which console or gaming PC you use, you will be able to pick up your progression, profile and statistics and jump into a game against others on their own device.

If you play Destiny 2, you'll know what to expect. It doesn't matter the platform, your profile, etc, will be stored in the cloud and accessed where needed.

Warzone

COD: Warzone will continue to be a separate game to Black Ops Cold War, but will incorporate themes, weapons and operators from the latest Call of Duty.

Activision has announced, however, that "both games will share post-launch seasonal content through the return of the Battle Pass system and the Store, as well as share a progression system."

Maps

There are several new maps that have been announced, each based on real-world locations that are important to the story of Cold War.

Armada is set in the North Atlantic Ocean, Crossroads in Uzbekistan, Satellite in the deserts of Angola, Miami in, er, Miami, and Moscow, 'nuff said.

They are large and very detailed, as you can see in the video above. The development team visited locations and photo scanned environments to get them as accurate as possible.

More maps will be available at launch, with details coming later.

Modes

Classic COD and Black Ops modes return, including Team Deathmatch, Search & Destory, Domination, and Kill Confirmed. Control from Black Ops 4 will be back too.

However, new modes will also be added, including VIP Escort, Combined Arms, and Fireteam.

VIP Escort is a 6v6 mode whereby one player is randomnly designated the VIP and must be protected by his or her team. The other team has to take the VIP out (and not for dinner).

Combined Arms is a 12v12 battle than incorporates vehicles as well as infantry gameplay.

Fireteam is more a category than a mode. Itcan be played with up to 10 teams of four players and has different objectives. Dirty Bomb will be one mode contained in that category, but we don't know a lot about it at present.
