Google Pixel 4a 5G: Release date, rumours, specs and price

In 2019 Google launched a more affordable handset to its Pixel line, the Pixel 3a. The company followed this device up with the Pixel 4a in August 2020 - a few months later than expected.

Google has confirmed there's going to be a 5G model of the Pixel 4a before 2020 is out though. This is everything we have heard about the Pixel 4a (5G) so far, including price, release date, design and specifications.

Release date and price

  • October 2020?
  • $499
  • Coming to 9 countries

The Google Pixel 4a was announced on 3 August. It will be available to buy in the US for $349 from 20 August, with pre-orders starting on 3 August. For those in the UK, the Pixel 4a will be available to pre-order for £349 from 10 September, with an on-sale date of 1 October.

The Pixel 4a 5G is confirmed to be coming this "fall" with the Pixel 5. Google confirmed in its blog post surrounding the launch of the Pixel 4a that the 5G model will start at $499 in the US. It will be coming to the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan and Australia.

An exact release date for the Pixel 4a 5G has yet to be revealed but a leak on Twitter has suggested that it will be arriving in October 2020. Whether Google will be holding a Made by Google event we don't yet know.

Design

  • 144 x 69.4 x 8.2mm
  • Polycarbonate body
  • White colour option

The Google Pixel 4a 5G is expected to have the same design as the Pixel 4a, feature a polycarbonate body, coupled with a coloured power button.

We're expecting the same, or very similar dimensions, to the Pixel 4a, though the weight might differ. The Pixel 4a weighs 143g but the Pixel 4a 5G could be slightly heavier. A leak has suggested we'll see it in a white colour, although Google's tease shows a black phone.

Assuming the 5G models offers the same design as the 4G mode, you'll find a pronounced square black camera housing on the rear with a single camera lens and flash in the top left corner and a physical fingerprint sensor in the centre of the rear. On the front, the display will likely have minimal bezels and a punch hole camera, like the Pixel 4a. A 3.5mm headphone jack is also likely.

Display

  • 5.81-inch display, 2340 x 1080 pixels, 19.5:9
  • Punch hole camera
  • OLED, 60Hz

The display on the Pixel 4a 5G is expected to be the same as the Pixel 4a. If this is the case, expect a 5.81-inch flat panel, with slimmed down bezels compared to the Pixel 3a devices and a punch hole for the front camera.

The Pixel 4a has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9 and a 60Hz refresh rate so we expect the 5G model to follow suit. The panel will likely be OLED like the 4a and the resolution is expected to be Full HD+.

Hardware specs

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 765, 5G
  • 6GB RAM, 128GB storage
  • 3140mAh battery

There were a couple of leaked codenames in the run up to the Pixel 4a launch - Sunfish, Bramble - along with hardware details. Code leaks paired the Pixel 4a (Sunfish) with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G and 6GB of RAM, which is the Pixel 4a. There's also 128GB of storage and a 3140mAh battery.

As to the other codenamed phones, they included a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 device, the platform with integrated 5G. There hasn't been as much detail leaked about this version so it's currently unclear if this will be the chipset used or whether there will be a bump in RAM or battery capacity.

So far, the Pixel 4a (5G) has been listed on a mobile carrier's website as a future 5G Google device, appeared in code from a new version of the Google Camera and Ishan Agarwal leaked it on Twitter too but none offer a spec breakdown as yet. We're expecting at least 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage and a 3140mAh battery like the Pixel 4a though.

Camera

  • 12.2-megapixel main camera
  • 8-megapixel front camera

Like the Pixel 3a, the Pixel 4a has the same camera unit as the Pixel 4 - that's the point of these phones after all - to give you access to those camera skills at a lower price point. We therefore expect the Pixel 4a 5G to offer the same too.

You can therefore expect a 12.2-megapixel 1.4µm sensor with f/1.7 lens and optical image stabilisation with all the AI skills of the Pixel 4, like Night Sight with astrophotography mode, Top Shot and Portrait Mode.

The front camera in the display is likely to be an 8-megapixel 1.22µm sensor with f/2.0 lens.
