Xbox has two subscription services for Xbox One and, eventually, Xbox Series X owners. As well as Xbox Live Gold, which is mandatory for online gaming, there is also a separate monthly subscription service for gamers: Xbox Game Pass.

It gives you access to more than 200 games to download and play on your Xbox One for one monthly fee. Plus, if you upgrade to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you also get Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Game Pass for PC and, soon, access to the Project xCloud cloud gaming service, all for the same price.

What is Xbox Game Pass?

Xbox Game Pass is a monthly subscription service that provides access to over 200 games, curated by the Xbox team. You can download and play them as often as you like, as long as you continue to pay the monthly fee. Some of them might also become unavailable as new titles are added, but you also have the option of buying any of the collection outright at special, member-exclusive prices.

Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games are part of the line-up, the latter two through backwards compatibility, so there are plenty of top titles to choose from.

In addition, Microsoft adds day-and-date releases of its own games. You can download and play Forza Horizon 4, Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2, for example - the exact same games also released in stores.

It is available to Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X owners. Xbox Game Pass for PC is also available on Windows 10, with its own set of games.

When the Xbox Series X becomes available at the end of 2020, Game Pass will be available for that too, and it has been confirmed next-gen versions of Microsoft's own games - such as Halo Infinite - will be free to members.

You can cancel at any time during your membership.

Another option will save you a lot of money if you also subscribe to Xbox Live Gold: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It even throws Xbox Game Pass for PC into the mix for good measure. All three memberships cost you just £10.99 per month right now.

Plus, when it is officially released, Microsoft's cloud gaming service, Project xCloud, will also be available as part of Ultimate at no extra cost.
