Samsung Galaxy Note 20: Release date, rumours, specs and leaks

The Samsung Galaxy S20 launched at the end of February 2020, giving us an insight into what we can expect from Samsung's smartphones this year.

The next major device is expected to be the Galaxy Note 20, which in the past has improved on the Galaxy S range and bettered it in certain areas, such as design and camera. But in 2020 things might be different, with questions over whether we'll see a Note 20+ or Note 20 Ultra at the top of the line.

Here's everything we have heard so far about the Galaxy Note 20 series.

Release date and price

  • 5 August 2020 launch event

We'd predict that Samsung will stick to an August launch for the Note 20 and we expect it to be an online event. Samsung confirmed that it will be launching the Note later in the year in its quarterly report. We now believe the Galaxy Note 20 series launch will take place on 5 August.

In terms of price, we'd expect Samsung to launch the Note 20 devices around the same prices as their predecessors. The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 starts at £869 or $949 and the Note 10+ starts at £999 or $1099, although the standard Note 20 might be positioned slightly lower to keep the costs down.

Will there be a Galaxy Note 20 Ultra?

The appearance of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra name in Bluetooth certification has raised questions about what devices Samsung will actually bring to market. Having expanded the Note models in 2019, will we see a repeat in 2020?

We're not so sure. The mention of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra on the Bluetooth SIG registration comes with the SM-N986U product number, which is the same that's been aligned with the Galaxy Note 20+. That deduction came from the fact that the SM-N876U was the Note 10+ 5G, so it makes sense that the N986U is the updated version of that device.

It has previously been explicitly stated that there will be no Note 20 Ultra, that we'll only be getting the Note 20 and Note 20+, but we can't help feeling that the final go-to-market name is still not locked down. Undoubtedly, more leaks will bring more information as we approach launch.

Design

  • Note 20: 161.8 x 75.3 x 8.5mm
  • Note 20+: 165 x 77.2 x 7.6mm
  • Note 20: Grey, Green, Copper
  • Note 20+/Ultra: Copper, White, Black

Renders suggest that the Note 20 and Note 20+ (or Note 20 Ultra) won't change too much from the Note 10, although the pronounced camera housing looks to be a feature.

Expect a waterproof metal frame sandwiched between glass panels and expect some interesting finishes too. An under display fingerprint sensor is likely, as well as a prominent rear camera housing and there will be a built-in S Pen. We're also expecting two size options, with both featuring a similar design.

It's also said that Note 20 will have an under-display fingerprint scanner that's twice the size that's been used before, which should improve its performance. This isn't the first time we've seen the rumour - it's been applied to a number of Samsung devices over the past year, so may or may not happen.

As for the colours, a recent leak has pointed to grey, copper and green for the Note 20, while the Note 20+ will come in black, white or copper.

Display

  • Note 20: 6.42in, 2345 x 1084 pixels (404ppi), 19.5:9, 60Hz
  • Note 20+: 6.87in, 3096 x 1444 pixel (497ppi), 19.3:9, 120Hz

With Samsung introducing a 120Hz refresh rate display on all the Galaxy S20 models, it's claimed it will be improved for the Note 20+/Ultra and that it will be variable rate, and should work at full resolution on the Note 20+. However, the regular Note 20 might not get the 120Hz display, as a point of differentiation and to keep the costs down, sticking to 60Hz instead.

Some reports have suggested an under-display camera, although this doesn't follow through into recent leaks, so we're expecting a punch hole camera.

One rumour that has gained traction is that the Note 20 will have a flat display. Samsung invented curved edges and it was the Note Edge in 2014 that started this trend. Now it looks as though Samsung might be stepping away from this design. That will support the S Pen better and might make for a better overall experience, while also distancing the company from many Chinese manufacturers that offer that curved design. We'll support that move, there's a lot to be said for flat displays.

Camera

  • S20+/S20 Ultra to have 108MP camera
  • 100x zoom reportedly won't feature

It's long been thought that the Note 20 might take the S20+ cameras and use those, however, there are reports that the Note 20+ will have a 108-megapixel camera, as the S20 Ultra did. Indeed, there's still some suspicion that the Note 20+ might launch as the Note 20 Ultra.

Elsewhere it's been reported that the Note 20+ won't be offering the 100x Zoom feature that made its debut on the S20 Ultra. Again, we suspect this comes down to criticism for the feature which - although it offered good zoom out to about 10x, as difficult to practically use beyond that, with poor results at the far end anyway. Instead, it looks like the S20+ might have a 50X zoom feature instead.

Posting to Weibo, Ice Universe has again suggested a 108-megapixel camera on the Note 20+, but with a laser focusing sensor to boost performance over the S20 Ultra. We then see a 50X periscope zoom lens and ultra-wide camera. The presence of a 108-megapixel camera has been verified by a second reliable source.

We suspect that Note 20 and the Note 20+ will have different camera systems, although full details have not yet leaked.

Hardware and specs

  • Qualcomm SD865+ or Exynos 992
  • At least 12GB RAM likely
  • Batteries likely to match Galaxy S20 series

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 will likely run similar processors to the Galaxy S20 range with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 or an Exynos chipset. It's been reported that Samsung is working on an updated Exynos 992 to boost the performance of the hardware it used in the S20. It's also been reported that the Note 20 could use new Snapdragon hardware, the 865+.

It's likely the Note 20 and Note 20+ will offer at least 12GB of RAM too, though Samsung might step up the RAM for the Plus model to match the Ultra. Some reports have suggested the Note 20 base model will drop its internal storage to 128GB instead of last year's 256GB, it would make sense if the S20 and Note 20 are going to share most of same specs.

Big batteries are also likely in the Note 20 series. The Samsung Galaxy S20 series ranges between 4000mAh and 5000mAh capacities and initial reports suggest that the Galaxy Note 20 will have a 4000mAh battery, matching that of the Galaxy S20. We've also seen the suggestion that the Note 20+ will have a 4500mAh battery, which doesn't come as much surprise.
