Lenovo Legion gaming phone: What to expect from the July launch?

Gaming phones continue to be on the rise, with Lenovo expected to unveil its Legion gaming phone (that's the working title) in July.

The company has been teasing the device in China for some time, but what started on leaks on Weibo - the Chinese social site - has developed into official communication.

The details, however, are still officially under wraps. But here's what the rumours are about this gaming handset:

First thing's first, we've long been told that this device will feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 865 chipset, the top standard that we'll likely see in 2020. That brings a lot of power, ideal for top-end performance. Some more recent rumours suggest an SD865+ could feature - but with that not even announced yet, we doubt it.

Furthermore there's an expectation that the 6.67-inch OLED screen will be a 144Hz panel to deliver super-smooth gaming performance. That ekes just beyond the current swathe of 120Hz panels that are entering the market, matching the likes of the Red Magic 5G's 144Hz refresh panel. It's what gamers expect.

The photo up top shows off what appears to be an in-screen fingerprint scanner, along with dual rear cameras (said to be 64-megapixel and 16MP). The device appears rather chunky, presumably to house a considerable battery capacity - said to be 5,000mAh - backed up with purported 90W super-fast charging.

But what's really out-there is shown in the photo just above. Yes, that's a pop-up selfie camera - but it features on the side of the phone, so when you're holding it with both hands, mid-game, you can chat face-to-face with your gaming buddies. Likely useful for picture-in-picture streaming - which isn't really a thing on mobile yet (this could be the device to change it).

To keep things cool there's a "3D cooling tower structure with dual heat pipe partitions". That'll be needed when everything is running full tilt.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this device, however, is the full visualisation of accessories. The clip-on case means left and right controllers, complete with buttons, joysticks and illumination. And that little box appears to be bundled wireless headphones.

We'll know more in July. But, as this is a Lenovo phone, don't expect to find it outside of China and perhaps some limited other territories in Asia.
