Best upcoming TV shows and movies on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and more

There is an amazing line-up of TV shows and movies coming our way soon on streaming services.

Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Now TV and Apple TV+ have some real treats coming our way. So here our top picks of the films and series coming to streaming platforms soon.

Upcoming TV shows and movies to watch on Netflix

Netflix was the first major streaming service to start an "originals" program, now just called Netflix series, where it funds and creates its own shows and movies. It also badges some programming as a Netflix series for the UK market that might have appeared on US TV first.

Many if not all of the series listed are presented in 4K Ultra HD and with HDR or Dolby Vision on compatible TVs or systems.

Space Force - season 1

  • Available: 29 May 2020

Steve Carell stars in this Netflix exclusive comedy series from the writers of The Office (US). A four-star general heads up the latest US military agency, Space Force, to take the fight to the stars.

The Umbrella Academy - season 2

  • Available: 31 July 2020

Amazingly, the second season of one of Netflix's biggest hits was already filmed before lockdown, so showrunner Steve Blackman and the team could finish it without breaching social distancing. We're very happy about this. Very happy indeed.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story Of Fire Saga

  • Available: 26 June 2020

While we love Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, we wonder if this Netflix exclusive movie about an Icelandic entry into the Eurovision Song Contest is even necessary. After all, the annual contest is nigh-on a parody in itself - and Ferrell's song is less funny/ludicrous than many of the real entries.

Upcoming TV shows and movies to watch on Amazon Prime Video

Like Netflix, Amazon has a healthy selection of homegrown shows available to Prime subscribers. You can also watch them at a cost without Prime, but it's a lot cheaper to pay for a yearly subscription and get a load of other benefits thrown in - including access to the Amazon Music streaming service and free next-day - or same-day in some cases - delivery. A lot of its shows are also bought from US channels for regional distribution.

Many of them are available in 4K HDR/Dolby Vision.

Alex Rider - season 1

  • Available: 24 June 2020

Based on Point Blanc, the second book in Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider novels, this eight-part teen spy drama will no doubt please fans. You might want to watch the Stormbreaker movie first to get a bit of background.

Hanna - season 2

  • Available: TBC (summer 2020)

The second season of Hanna is tipped for a summer release, although we haven't got an exact date yet. The teen assassin drama has been a huge hit for Amazon, so we fully expect there are plenty out there gagging for more.

The Boys - season 2

  • Available: TBC

The first series of The Boys - based on the comic books by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson - was both hilarious and horrific in equal measure. We cannot wait for another outing for Hughie, Butcher and the gang.

El Presidente - season 1

  • Available: 5 June 2020

El Presidente is a comedy drama limited series based on the 2015 FIFA corruption scandal, focusing primarily on Sergio Jadue, the disgraced former president of the Chilean Football Association.

Upcoming TV shows and movies coming to Disney+

Of course Netflix and Amazon Prime aren't the only places to get your TV fix, Disney+ is a relatively new entrant to the streaming market and has started strong.

It too offer films and TV programming in 4K HDR/Dolby Vision.

The Muppets go meta, with the new show on Disney's streaming platform focusing on their attempts to produce a streaming show.

Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2 - season 1

  • Available: 26 June 2020

Like the Mandalorian docuseries available on the platform now, Frozen 2 gets several episodes looking behind-the-scenes at the making of the animated sequel.

Hamilton

  • Available: 3 July 2020

A movie of the multi-award-winning musical was planned for 2021 but has been brought forward to give us something to watch during lockdown. It uses innovative techniques to film the stage show.

Upcoming TV shows and movies to watch on Now TV

Now TV gives non-Sky subscribers access to shows and films on the satellite broadcaster's channels, all without needing a monthly contract. And, as Sky is the UK host of HBO content - along with a whole stack of its own original programming - there are plenty of great series coming to Now TV too.

Sky Cinema is also available through Now TV for big movie releases, albeit in a maximum of 1080p.

Gemini Man

  • Available: 19 June 2020

Will Smith stars in this Ang Lee thriller - twice. His old assassin character is confronted with a younger clone, also played by Smith using some incredible de-aging technologies. In many respects, that's worth a view in itself.

I Hate Suzie - season 1

  • Available: June 2020

Former Doctor Who assistant and pop star, Billie Piper takes on the role of a fading celebrity who is faced with new, unwanted attention when an illicit photo of her appears online.

An animated musical comedy about the saving of New York's finest outdoor spot, Central Park by voice of Josh Gad (Olaf in Frozen) also features Kristen Bell, Hamilton's Leslie Odom Jr. and Stanley Tucci.
