Apple iPhone SE (2020) specs, release date and price

There has been talk of a replacement for the iPhone SE stretching back into 2018. The talk can now stop, because the new iPhone SE is official, with Apple announcing the new model on 15 April 2020.

It won't officially be called iPhone SE 2 (or iPhone 9), instead it'll just be iPhone SE, although this is a second-generation phone and very different to the original.

Here's everything you need to know about the 2020 iPhone SE.

Apple iPhone SE release date and price

  • Announced on 15 April 2020
  • Pre-orders open from 17 April 2020
  • General sale from 24 April 2020
  • Priced from $399/£419

The Apple iPhone SE second-gen will be available to pre-order from Friday 17 April, with order opening at 5am PDT, which would be 13:00 BST.

The new model will be on general sale from Friday 24 April globally.

The iPhone SE 2 will start from $399, or $229 on trade-in via Apple; it will be £419 in the UK and that's for the 64GB model.

Apple iPhone SE design

  • Looks like the iPhone 8
  • Aluminium and glass design
  • IP67 water and dust protection
  • 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3mm

The new iPhone SE is essentially the iPhone 8 in terms of design, retaining the aluminium and glass build - as well as the IP67 water and dust resistance, so although this is the most affordable iPhone, you're getting a quality design and build.

It will be available in three different colours - black, white and Product(RED) with a portion of the (RED) proceeds going to Global Fund's COVID-19 Response, as well as other charitable causes. The front of the phone will be black on all models and as this is essentially the same design as the iPhone 8, there's that wider bezel to the top and bottom of the phone, housing the Touch ID sensor.

The aluminium sides of the phone will match the colour of the rear and there's good news if you happen to have iPhone 8 cases lying around as they will fit the new iPhone SE, as it's the same size.

iPhone SE 2020 display

  • 4.7-inch LCD panel
  • 750 x 1,334 resolution
  • 326 ppi

The new Apple iPhone SE will have a 4.7-inch display with a 1334 x 750 pixel resolution. That's what Apple calls Retina HD, but even if it's a little less far-reaching than the display on the iPhone XR or iPhone 11, it still supports many of the latest standards.

You get True Tone so the display will adapt to the ambient conditions to give you the best visuals, while it also supports technologies such as Dolby Vision - great for movies - as well as HDR10, so you won't be missing out on the visuals when streaming entertainment.

iPhone SE 2 camera

  • 12MP, f/1.8 single rear camera
  • Portrait mode, Portrait Lighting, Smart HDR
  • Up to 4K 60fps video capture

There's a single camera on the iPhone SE 2020. It uses the same sensor as the iPhone 8, but it's been boosted with a lot of the latest camera experiences available on iPhone.

You'll get portrait mode with depth control and this is coming from a single camera experience rather than needing a second sensor. Along with that you'll get Portrait Lighting effects - six of them - with the image signal processor of the A13 Bionic boosting the performance of this camera.

You'll get Smart HDR, adjusting the lighting balance across frames, making this all sound like a very compelling single camera experience.

iPhone SE core hardware specs

  • Apple A13 Bionic
  • 64/128/256GB storage
  • Wireless charging

The iPhone SE 2 will sit on the Apple A13 Bionic chip, the same chip that powers the latest iPhone 11. That means that even though this is a much more affordable phone, it will have plenty of power.

It's going to be available in 64/128/256GB storage options.

The iPhone SE also supports wireless charging with a Qi-compatible charger, with wired fast charging getting the battery up to 50 per cent in just 30 minutes.

There's also Wi-Fi 6, Gigabit LTE and support for dual SIM using eSIM functionality.

Apple iPhone SE rumours: What happened in the run up to launch?

Here's a history of the rumours and leaks surrounding the iPhone SE.

3 April 2020: iPhone SE name leaked, other details

It looks like the incoming iPhone SE (2020) will use the iPhone 8 shell and screen after the leak of a screen protector listing that shows it is the same size as the iPhone 7 and 8. It looks as though it will have the same internals as the iPhone 11. It'll come in red, black and white and there will be three storage sizes - 64, 128 and 256GB.

Some rumours also suggest 22 April for a launch date.

16 March 2020: iPhone 9 Plus coming with 5.5-inch screen

Unlike the original SE, it appears Apple may be planning to launch the new affordable series as a regular and 'Plus' model. If so, this would likely mean a discontinuation of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

18 February 2020: Apple to hold a March event?

Fitting in with the narative of a spring reveal, the latest rumour suggests that Apple will hold a spring event on 31 March with the phone going on sale on 3 April. We also may get a revised iPad lineup on that date.

22 January 2020: Mass production in February 2020, launch in March

As had been predicted previously, it seems Apple is gearing up to a launch in Spring 2020. A report claims that the manufacturer will ramp up production in February 2020, with the aim to unveil it the following month.

14 January 2020: Longer screen and Face ID?

Just to put a cat in amongst the pigeons, another rumour goes directly against the current thinking and suggests we won't see a Touch ID sensor, but a longer screen and Face ID instead. We're not sure about this one.

7 January 2020: We get our first look at a quality 3D render

3D renders are published, giving us our first proper look at the phone. It looks very much like a revamped version of the iPhone 8, with a slight change in materials.

3 January 2020: SE 2 could actually be the iPhone 9

Another rumour predicts that the phone won't be called the iPhone SE 2. Instead, it'll be the iPhone 9, and might even be available in two different versions.

14 October 2019: iPhone SE 2 could cost just $399

Another prediction from an analyst, this time suggesting the updated affordable iPhone will cost just $399. We're not sure, given the closeness in price with the iPhone 8. Perhaps Apple will discontinue the 8.

3 October 2019: 2020 launch predicted by analyst

Ming-Chi Kuo, a known analyst, stated his belief that Apple will launch the second generation iPhone SE in 2020.

4 September 2019: A13 Bionic chip, 2020 launch

Not the first or last time you see a certain analyst's name mentioned. One of his earliest predictions of a 2020 launch, but we also get mention of possible hardware specs. We might expect A13 Bionic processor.

1 May 2018: iPhone SE 2 renders, with Face ID notch

One of the earliest looks at a phone that never happened. This one actually looked like the iPhone SE from 2016, but Apple didn't launch it.
