Oppo Watch to launch at its own event: "It deserves its own presentation"

Despite having officially announced that its smartwatch would be unveiled at the Find X2 launch, Oppo has seemingly changed its mind, and decided to launch it at a later date.

Oppo has been teasing its smartwatch for a good few weeks now, and it appears those teasers are going to be continuing for at least the short-term future.

During its presentation of the all-new Find X2 series of smartphones, Oppo only briefly mentioned the watch right at the very end of the presentation and only to say that its wearable will be getting its own dedicated launch at some point in the near future.

While many may have seen the Oppo Watch as a sort-of accessory, it's clear the manufacturer wants it to be seen as its own, proper device worth of attention away from smartphones.

In fact, Oppo's message was clear: "it deserves its own presentation."

That doesn't explain why the company tweeted out that it would be unveiled on 6 March, however.

We don't exactly know what to expect in terms of specs and features for this smartwatch, but a few details have been revealed already.

Firstly, we know the watch is going to be much more in line with the design language of the Apple Watch than other round smartwatches.

The metal case will be rounded on the sides and corners, but the screen will be square, and protected by a sheet of curved glass.

Secondly, we've seen at least two or three different band materials, colours and styles already, so we're sure Oppo is going after the same approach as Apple, although we suspect there won't be quite as many finishes and styles as the Apple Watch. That would be an ambitious launch for Oppo.

From screens we've seen on images so far, it appears the watch will run a custom operating system designed by Oppo itself. We've seen little to suggest it runs Wear OS. But given how most other big-name tech manufacturers have approached wearables in recent years, that's not a surprise.

Oppo didn't say exactly when the watch will launch, just that it will, in the future. We're intrigued to see the details of that play out, but we'll keep you updated as and when more information comes.
