Samsung Galaxy Z Flip to feature Ultra Thin Glass display (UTG)

It may have taken time and hit various hurdles, but 2019 did, finally, see Samsung launch the first Galaxy Fold folding phone. And in 2020 we're expecting the Galaxy Z Flip, the clamshell foldable, complete with a whole new screen coating type.

Back in December 2019 we covered the announcement - as LetsGoDigital pointed out in its acquisition of a Samsung-made trademark application - that Samsung was set to claim Ultra Thin Glass (UTG for short, or Samsung UTG) as its own.

At the time we pondered whether this new glass was designated for a foldable device, as glass doesn't fold. Nowhere in the trademark application did Samsung make any specific regards to such foldables either - other than 'display for smart phones', but that could be any form rather than just foldables.

Now, according to Max Weinbach of XDA Developers, the Z Flip will have a 'crease' to negate this folding issue. Sounds like a potentially sensible solution to us.

We can also see why UTG would be used, as it's a lot more scratch-resistant than the screen covering on the original Galaxy Fold device. It also does away with the reflective quality that you'll see in POLED displays - that's Plastic OLED - such as that found on the Moto Razr.

We'll know more ahead of Mobile World Congress 2020, as the Galaxy Z Flip reveal is expected at an event on 11 February, if rumours are true.
