Google Pixel 4 vs Pixel 4 XL: What's the rumoured difference?

There have been numerous leaks surrounding the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, including some design and feature confirmations from Google itself, but how are the two expected to compare to each other?

Here are the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL's rumoured specifications up against each other.

What's expected to be the same?

• Design
• Rear camera
• Processor/RAM/Storage
• Software and features

The Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL are both expected to feature a rear camera system within a square housing, as well as gesture controls and Face unlock thanks to Google's Soli motion-sensing radar chip.

The two devices are also expected to feature a bezel at the top of their displays and we'd expect them to both run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon 855 platform. Neither are likely to offer microSD support, as has been the case on all Pixel devices, and neither are likely to have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The software experience will no doubt be near enough identical, with both expected to launch on Android 10 and both are expected to offer an identical design apart from physical size, with a contrasting power button and three colour options.

What's expected to be different between the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL?

Plenty is expected to transfer between little and large in the case of the upcoming Pixel devices, but there will no doubt be a few differences too. 

Physical size

• Pixel 4: 147 x 68.9 x 8.2mm
• Pixel 4 XL: 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm

Unsurprisingly, the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are expected to differ in terms of physical size.

According to rumours, the Google Pixel 4 will measure 147 x 68.9 x 8.2mm, while the Google Pixel 4 XL will measure 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm.

Display 

• Pixel 4: Between 5.6 and 5.8-inches, Full HD+
• Pixel 4 XL: Between 6.2 and 6.4-inches, Quad HD+

As with the physical footprint, the display size is expected to differ between the Pixel 4 and 4 XL. The Pixel 4 is claimed to have a display between 5.6-inches and 5.8-inches, while the Pixel 4 XL is said to be offering a display between 6.2-inches and 6.4-inches. 

No details have been provided in leaks with regard to resolution but the Pixel 3 XL has a Quad HD+ resolution, while the Pixel 3 has a Full HD+ resolution, so the same might apply for the Pixel 4 devices.

Front camera

• Pixel 4: Single front camera
• Pixel 4 XL: Dual front camera?

Google released an image showing the sensors at the top of the Pixel 4's display, and a single front camera lens was visible. 

No details have been revealed about the Pixel 4 XL's camera so it is not currently clear if it will offer the same single sensor as the Pixel 4, or if Google will retain the dual front camera from the Pixel 3 XL for its successor. 

Battery

• Pixel 4: 2800mAh
• Pixel 4 XL: 3700mAh

The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are expected to offer different battery capacities, as the Pixel 3 and 3 XL do.

According to reports, the Pixel 4 will have a 2800mAh battery, while the Pixel 4 XL will have a 3700mAh battery.

Price

• Pixel 4: From around £699?
• Pixel 4 XL: From around £799?

There are currently no price details for the Pixel 4 and 4 XL in leaks, but there will no doubt be a difference in price between the two models when they launch, as you would expect.

There is around £130 difference between the Pixel 3 and 3 XL at the moment, so we'd expect at least £100 between the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, with the larger model naturally the more expensive.

Conclusion

For now, most of the information surrounding the Pixel 4 and 4 XL is speculation, though we do know a rear camera system in a square housing will be present, as will gesture controls and Face unlock.

The leaks suggest the Pixel 4 and 4 XL will offer identical designs, hardware and software experiences, though we expect differences in battery capacities, price, displays and footprint sizes.
