Google Pixel 4 specs, release date, news and rumours
Google's Pixel 3 and 3 XL devices have been around since October 2018 and their successors - dubbed the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL - are due to be announced later today - 15 October.
Here is everything we have heard so far regarding the Pixel 4.

Pixel 4 release date

For the last couple of years, the Google Pixel devices have been unveiled in October during the company's Made by Google event. The Pixel 2 and 2 XL were announced on 19 October 2017, while the Pixel 3 and 3 XL were a little earlier on 4 October 2018.
This year, Google's Made by Google event will take place in New York on 15 October - today - which is where the Pixel devices will be announced, likely alongside some other devices, including the Google Nest Mini.
Pixel 4 price

Prices for the current flagship Pixel devices start at £739/$799, or £869/$899 for the larger model, so expect the Pixel 4 to dance around the same figure, if not higher.
A retailer listing put the Pixel 4 as starting at around £730, while the Pixel 4 XL appears to start around £1000, though Evan Blass has also reported on pricing, and the conversion sees the new devices starting around the same as the current models.
Both Samsung and Apple have increased prices for their latest devices so it wouldn't be a surprise to see Google do the same, even if its Pixel 3a and 3a XL sold better than their more expensive siblings.

Google's Pixel devices have always featured a two-tone rear. The ratios of the two sections on the back has changed over the last couple of years, but the design idea itself has remained. Leaked images suggest that might not be the case for the Pixel 4 though. We're also expecting no fingerprint sensor with the hope that Google moves to an under-display option for the new devices, or just Face unlock.
Google has confirmed there will be a square camera housing in the top left corner of the rear which is also new for this year.
A different coloured power button to the main body has also been a signature feature of Google's Pixel devices in the past and we'd expect this to continue, as well as the two size options. Physical dimensions have been claimed as 147 x 68.9 x 8.2mm for the Pixel 4 and 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm for the Pixel 4 XL.
Leaks have also shown off white, black and orange colour options so far - officially claimed to be called Just Black, Clearly White and Oh So Orange.

Reports suggest the Pixel 4 will have a 5.7-inch screen and the Pixel 4 XL will have a 6.3-inch display for 2019. It's claimed both displays will offer 90Hz refresh rates, like the OnePlus 7 Pro, offering a smooth and slick experience.
Google has confirmed the Pixel 4 will also come with a range of sensors in a bezel at the top of the display, allowing for motion gestures and Face unlock. This means no notch for either Pixel device this year, with both set to offer bezels at the top and bottom of the display.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is expected to be the chipset of choice for the Pixel 4 devices, with reports of 6GB of RAM support. Neither is excepted to offer microSD for storage expansion but both will run on pure Android Q. A retailer listing also suggests the two models will be available in 64GB and 128GB storage capacities.
In terms of battery capacities, the Pixel 4 is said to have a 2800mAh cell, while the Pixel 4 XL is said to have a 3700mAh cell. Both will no doubt offer fast charging support. The Pixel 4 is confirmed to offer Google's Soli radar chip that will allow for the Face Unlock technology and motion gestures.

Based on details offered by Google itself, the Pixel 4 will have a camera system in a square housing positioned in the top left of the device.
It's claimed this system will be a dual camera comprised of a 12-megapixel sensor and a 16-megapixel telephoto sensor moving on from the single sensor offered by the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. It's claimed there will be a Motion Mode for action shots, as well as enhanced night time shooting.
The Pixel 3 XL had a dual front camera, but the images offered by Google regarding the Soli chip and Face Unlock features suggest a single front camera will be present, at least for the smaller model, as was the case for the Pixel 3.

Pixel 4 rumours: What's happened?

7 October 2019: Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL pricing leaks, could be cheaper than Pixel 3 and 3 XL
Evan Blass has reported that the 64GB of the Pixel 4 will cost CAD$1049.95, while the 128GB will cost CAD$1199.95, both of which are a slight increase on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. The 64GB Pixel 4 XL meanwhile, is said to cost CAD$1199.95, while the 128GB will cost CAD$1359.95.
These prices would directly translate to a starting price of around £630 for the Pixel 4 and around £730 for the Pixel 4 XL, which would make them cheaper than the starting prices for the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. For the US, the conversion would be around $790 starting price for the Pixel 4 and around $900 for the Pixel 4 XL, which is the same as the Pixel 3 and 3 XL launched at.
3 October 2019: Oh So Orange press image appears online
Evan Blass - who has already offered press images of the Just Black Pixel 4 and the Clearly White Pixel 4 XL, has now revealed a press image of the Oh So Orange colour.
3 October 2019: Expect even better Night Sight from Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL with Pixel Neural Core
A report from 9to5Google suggests the upcoming Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will have a new version of the Pixel Visual Core co-processor found inside Pixel 2 and 3 handsets, called Pixel Neural Core.
The Visual Core is the brains behind the Pixel's superb low-light Night Sight tech, so we can expect some big claims from Google for the new camera.
3 October 2019: Videos of Google Pixel 4 Motion Sense gestures and new Google Assistant leak
9to5Google also posted some other promotional videos of the Pixel 4, including ones that show the Motion Sense gestures in action, as well as the new Google Assistant.
3 October 2019: Google Pixel 4 camera coming with dual exposure controls for even better shots
9to5Google posted a leaked promotional video that shows the Google Pixel 4 offering dual exposure controls in the camera application, giving users the option to separately manage the highlights and shadows when taking a picture to ensure everything is clear, no matter how bright the sun is shining on or behind your subject.
2 October 2019: Pixel 4's voice recorder app will automatically transcribe for you
XDA Developers reported that the Pixel 4 smartphone will have two new smart capabilities: a voice recording app which can automatically transcribe the recording for you, and car crash detection which automatically calls 911.
The latter is only expected to be available in the US at launch though, while the former is said to only be available in US English for now.
2 October 2019: This is the Google Pixel 4 XL
Following the press image of the Google Pixel 4, Evan Blass followed up with an image of the Pixel 4 XL.
1 October 2019: Google Pixel 4 press image leaks online
Evan Blass - @EvLeaks - posted a press image of the Pixel 4 on Twitter. The image shows the front and back of the smartphone, with the square camera housing on the rear and the bezel at the top of the display.
25 September 2019: Every angle of Google Pixel 4 XL revealed in hands on images
SlashLeaks published a number of hands on images of the Google Pixel 4 XL, showing the device off from every angle. It's the Clearly White model pictured, which has a orange power button and a black frame.
23 September 2019: Google Pixel 4 and Nest Mini appear on retailer listing early, with prices
The Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL appeared on Irish retailer Elara with prices starting at €819.98 and €1126.68 respectively. They are listed as coming in 64GB and 128GB storage options and the three colour options will be Just Black, Clearly White and Oh So Orange.
18 September 2019: Google ad confirms Pixel 4 will come in a bright orange
A Google banner advert in Times Square confirms the Pixel 4 will be revealed on 15 October and it will come in a bright orange colour option. The banner was spotted by a Reddit user, showing the square camera lens in all its glory.
16 September 2019: Google sends out invites to 15 October event, likely for Pixel 4 and 4 XL
Google sent out official invites to an event in New York on 15 October asking the press to come "see a few new things Made by Google". The company also put a placeholder on YouTube which should allow you to watch the event live when it takes place.
12 September 2019: Google Pixel 4 XL hands-on videos appear, no surprises left
Two hands on videos appeared online showing off what the presenters claim to be the Pixel 4 XL. The videos show the device from all angles and one of the videos shows a fully functioning device, leading many to believe it is the real deal.
11 September 2019: Google Pixel 4 event to take place on 15 October?
Evan Blass has tweeted an image of what we assume is the Pixel 4 with the words "Google Fall Event: 10/15?". There's no further evidence to support the event date but Blass is a prolific leaker and is often right so we'll be pencilling in this date for the Pixel 4 launch.
9 September 2019: Google Pixel 4 features revealed in leaked promotional video
A promotional video picked up by ProAndroid confirms several of the rumoured features for the Pixel 4, including enhanced night time shots, gestures and an astrophotography mode.
There is also reference to new features from Google Assistant and the design is show off in the video too - with a square camera housing and a black frame with a white rear and coloured button.
7 September 2019: Pixel 4 camera rumours: Motion Mode, Night Sight 2.0, and 8x zoom expected
A number of leaks appeared surrounding the Google Pixel 4 camera capabilities from various sources.
The upcoming smartphone is said to be coming with 8x zoom, an enhanced Night Sight feature, and a new "Motion Mode" for action scenes, among other things.
28 August 2019: Leaked Google Pixel 4 images show no more familiar two-tone rear
Some images picked up by XDA Developers appear to show the Google Pixel 4 running on the Sprint network. The images show no two-tone rear, a coloured power button, square camera housing and Android 10.
There is no source for the images but we assume they have come from a Sprint employee.
21 August 2019: Google Pixel 4 design shown off in full in latest video
YouTuber Waqar Khan posted a video showing what the Pixel 4 is expected to look like based on the rumours so far and it includes a couple of the expected specifications too, including mention of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and 90Hz refresh rate for the display.
The square rear camera setup revealed by Google is shown in the video, along with a bezel at the top of the Pixel 4's display - another feature Google itself confirmed when it announced the Pixel 4 would be the first device to offer its Soli radar chip for Face Unlock and Motion Gestures.
7 August 2019: Google's Pixel 4 might feature a 90Hz 'Smooth Display'
9to5Google has published some information regarding the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL specifications. The site claims the Pixel 4 will have a 5.7-inch display, while the Pixel 4 XL will have a 6.3-inch display and both will have a 90Hz refresh rate, like the OnePlus 7 Pro.
The report also said the Pixel 4 would have a 2800mAh battery, while the Pixel 4 XL would have a 3700mAh battery. In terms of camera specifications, the Pixel 4 is expected to offer a dual rear camera with a 12-megapixel sensor and a 16-megapixel telephoto lens. Both phones are claimed to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with 6GB of RAM and it's claimed both devices will be announced on 4 October.
29 July 2019: Pixel 4 will feature gesture controls and Face Unlock, reveals Google
Google revealed in an official blog post via its Twitter handle that the Pixel 4 would be the first device to feature the Soli motion-sensing radar chip, enabling Motion Sense gesture controls and Face Unlock.
The blog post shared a video of the gesture controls in action, allowing users to wave their hand to silence a phone call, snooze an alarm or skip a track. The Face Unlock feature meanwhile, is said to work in any orientation, even upside down, and you'll be able to use it for secure payments and app authentication too, as you can with Apple's Face ID.

22 July 2019: Google Pixel 4 screen panels suggest both devices will have top bezel packed with sensors
Ice Universe tweeted some screen panels claiming to be for the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. Both panels show a top bezel above the display with several holes, suggesting multiple sensors.
If accurate, it looks like the Pixel 4 XL will ditch the notch of its predecessor and go back to offering a forehead, like the Pixel 3 continued to do.
8 July 2019: New Pixel 4 XL renders give us a glimpse at Google's forthcoming phone
Steve Hemmerstoffer, known online @onleaks, shared some images of the Pixel 4 XL via Pricebaba. The images show the square camera array in the top left corner, as previous leaks have shown, but they also show the front of the device, which appears to have a forehead rather than a notch.
Within the forehead, there's a speaker and dual cameras, along with other sensors across the front - all of which was contained within that notch on the front of the Pixel 3 XL. There's speculation that the top bar might contain some other sensors. Hemmerstoffer's images show no fingerprint sensor and no 3.5mm headphone socket, but there is a contrasting white power button.
18 June 2019: Pixel 4 and 4 XL dimensions leaked
Leaker @OnLeaks previously offered some renders of the Pixel 4 and 4 XL but he has since followed up with another tweet detailing the measurements expected for the two devices.
According to @OnLeaks, the Pixel 4 will have a display between 5.6-inches and 5.8-inches and it will measure around 147 x 68.9 x 8.2mm, or 9.3mm if you include the camera bump.
The Pixel 4 XL meanwhile, is expected to have a display between 6.2-inches and 6.4-inches and measure roughly 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm, also 9.3mm with the camera bump.
14 June 2019: Actual Google Pixel 4 spotted being used outdoors
9to5Google was sent some images of what appears to be the Pixel 4 in the wild. The images show a device with the same square camera array in the top left rear corner as Google confirmed was coming to the Pixel 4 in an official tease.
The images see the device in a material cover too which looks very similar to official Google cases we have seen in the past, supporting the idea that the images are of the Pixel 4.
12 June 2019: This is the Pixel 4: Google one-ups recent leaks by revealing phone early
Google tweeted a press render of the Pixel 4 from its official MadebyGoogle account, confirming the design seen in some of the more recent leaks.
The render shows the square camera housing in the top left corner of the rear with two camera lenses and a third sensor. It doesn't show the front of the device, but we can see a power button and the "G" logo at the bottom.
12 June 2019: Google Pixel 4 could offer hands free control
9to5Google has reported that the Google Pixel 4 could feature the Soli radar sensor allowing for air gestures and hands-free control for some functions.
XDA Developers also suggested that the Pixel 4 might have an auto-adjusting display after it stumbled across some settings in Android Q referring to dynamic white balance adjustment.
12 June 2019: Pixel 4 leak suggests Google could be working on its own version of Face ID
Unbox Therapy's Lew Hilsenteger released a video of metal dummies of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL showing a square camera arrangement, as we saw in previous leaks on 10 June.
Hilsenteger also claimed the Pixel 4 and 4 XL would have two rear cameras, along with a "spectral sensor", whilst the front would have "five different imaging units". This led to the suggestion that Google is working on its own facial recognition technology to rival Apple's Face ID.
10 June 2019: Google Pixel 4 renders show a camera arrangement that nobody asked for
A render from @OnLeaks in collaboration with Pricebaba shows a design for the Pixel 4 that is similar to what has been suggested for the iPhone 2019 with a square camera array in the top left corner of the rear.
The renders also show the ear speaker at the top of the display, suggesting the notch from the Pixel 3 XL will remain. Pricebaba suggests the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 will be under the hood, along with 6GB of RAM, which is a pretty good educated guess.
17 May 2019: Google Pixel 4 leak suggests no physical buttons
A leak from Jon Prosser on YouTube channel Front Page Tech has claimed a credible source has said the Pixel 4 would have a punch hole front camera, an in-display fingerprint sensor and no physical buttons, with capacitive controls instead.
Front Page Tech also revealed some Pixel 4 renders in the video discussing the leak, that it had published previously.
12 April 2019: Google's Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are codenamed Coral and Flame
9to5Google reported that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL codenames are Coral and Flame, respectively.
2 April 2019: Pixel 4 name name-dropped by Google employee
Several mentions of the Google Pixel 4 have been made by a Google employee who posted to an Android Open Source Project code change.
The post offered little information but the Pixel 4 was mentioned three times, and it's suggested that Google Pixel 4 pre-production units could be in testing.
12 February 2019: Pixel 4 could have improved Dual-SIM support
Some comments from a Google engineer suggest the Pixel 4 will offer better dual-SIM capabilities. The Pixel 3 and 3 XL offer the ability to have two SIMs, one physical and one eSIM but you can only use one account for calls and texts.
It's claimed the Pixel 4 will change this, offering simultaneous use of two accounts.
17 January 2019: Patent appears showing all glass, notchless Pixel 4
Google filed a patent which appeared on the World Intellectual Property Organisation's website, showing an all-screen design and a two-tone rear, similar to previous Pixel devices.
It is not clear if the sketch refers to the Pixel 4 but if it does, it suggests a single rear camera, fingerprint sensor on the rear and a notchless display.
