How to watch Wimbledon in 4K HDR on BBC iPlayer, Sky Q and Virgin TV

This year's Wimbledon tennis tournament starts on Monday 1 July, and you can watch much of it in 4K Ultra HD. In fact, many of the matches will be available with the stunning HDR contrast and colour tech too.

The BBC is showing all matches from Centre Court at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in 4K HDR (using the HLG standard) on BBC iPlayer. And, with Virgin Media recently adding HDR support to its Virgin TV V6 Box, you can watch it all there.

Sky Q 2TB box owners can also watch the action in 4K. HDR is yet to come to that platform, however.

Here then is how to ensure you watch the action from The Championships in the best formats possible.

How to watch Wimbledon in 4K HDR on BBC iPlayer

As it debuted last year, the BBC is extending its Ultra HD trials to include coverage of Wimbledon in 4K HDR, using the HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) standard. Every match played on the Centre Court will be available to view in the format through BBC iPlayer.

You can get it if your TV is compatible with HLG tech (see the list of supported TVs here) and have a broadband speed fast enough. The BBC suggests you will need a speed around 36Mbps or above to get full 4K (3840 x 2160). However, you can still get an excellent, higher-than-Full HD image if your internet speed is 16Mbps or above.

All you need to do is open BBC iPlayer and when there is a match available to view, you will be given the option to watch it in UHD, HD or SD (standard definition). Choose UHD and enjoy.

As with the World Cup coverage, access to the iPlayer Wimbledon 4K streams will be on a first-come, first-served basis (pun not intended). "Tens of thousands" of spots will be available for each match, however, so you shouldn't have any problems.

The feed will be available through the iPlayer app on the Fire TV Stick 4K, the Roku Streaming Stick+ and Virgin TV V6 box (see below).

Virgin Media has confirmed that, as its V6 Box now has HDR (HLG) support, you will be able to watch all Centre Court matches - including the mens and womens finals - in 4K HDR through the BBC iPlayer app on the STB.

All other matches on all other courts will be shown in full in HD for the first time. You just need to hit the red button on the remote to choose between the live feeds.

How to watch Wimbledon in 4K on Sky Q

We're yet to hear confirmation, but Sky will likely offer all Centre Court matches in Ultra HD but not HDR as the technology is not yet supported.

Sky Q 2TB box owners should be able to access the 4K feed through the BBC iPlayer app, but we're yet to hear if we should expect a similar separate service to last year's additional offering.

That was delivered as a separate feed accessed via a pop up/red button message while watching on BBC One or Two.
