Apple's $10K sneakers were only the half of it, these 80s clothes were quite magnificent

A pair of 1990s Apple sneakers have recently sold at auction for $10K, but it wasn't the first time the company dabbled in fashion.

In the mid-80s, Apple produced a whole range of clothing and accessories, designed for those who clamoured to get hold of products with the older, multi-coloured logo on them. It even produced its own catalogue, called the "Apple Collection", in order to sell merchandise to the nearest idi... dedicated follower of fashion. And all within the trends of the time.

Here are some of our favourites from that catalogue. We wonder how much any of them might sell for today.

To be fair, these images could have just been lifted from a Benetton collection catalogue today. But the weirdest part about these particular entries is that they don't seem to sport the Apple logo at all.

This is more like it, however. And could that be one of the first Apple Watch models we spy? Shows it had ambitions on wristwear long before smartwatch technology arrived. As for the Swiss army knife, well...

Multi-coloured belts and, especially, gilets were all the rage in the early to mid-80s. So was staring off into the distance wondering if you've left your Peek Freans tinned pie in the oven.

You've got to love the Apple branded baseball cap and matching sweatshirt, slung jumper combination. We can almost hear Peter Cetera belting out Glory of Love in the background.

Of all the items here, the old Macintosh T-shirts are our favourite by far. There'd be a killing for them today in Hoxton's street market for sure.

Golf course chic had its time - around 10 minutes on Tuesday, 7 April 1984.

Let's face it, this was around the time when it was en vogue to wear "Frankie Says Relax" on your T-shirt. Having a crazy, 80s style "Apple" on it instead made complete sense.

The auditions for the sequel to American Psycho were progressing rather well.

There were plenty of other highly desirable items in the catalogue too: take an Apple calculator, for example, you can't get more 80s than that. It's also a rare instance of Apple being happy to slap its badge on to other brand's gear (in this case Braun).

And how about an Apple windsurfing board? The 80s sport of choice for the discerning city banker. At a cool $1,100 it wouldn't even break the bank - unless you take into account inflation, which would price it at $3,650 today, enough for a top-notch 16-inch MacBook Pro (and pocket change).

Part of us wishes that Apple also looked back on those halcyon days and sees an opportunity to reenter the fashion biz. The other part wants to run screaming for the hills.
